Introducing EcoSmart

All public bodies have to meet a HEAT target to reduce Carbon emissions by three per cent year on year. Our Carbon Management Programme sets a target of reducing CO2 emissions by at least 25 per cent by 2016.  The programme benefits everyone, staff, patients and the wider community as costs are reduced and our impact on the environment is minimised.  NHSGGC is embracing this opportunity with our EcoSmart campaign. EcoSmart is a co-ordinated campaign to embed sustainability into everything we do, taking work already done in areas such as travel planning and energy efficiency to the next level. We are widening the impact of EcoSmart by working with local authorities and other bodies in partnerships such as Sustainable Glasgow and the Glasgow Climate Change Partnership. This work will help us to meet our obligations under the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009

Initiatives under the EcoSmart campaign include:

  • Waste food goes to an anaerobic digestion plant which removes food waste from domestic waste and converts it into natural gas and compost material.
  • Surplus furniture has been re-used by inclusion in starter packs for homeless people.
  • At Hillingdon Laundry waste water recycling and energy efficiency measures are producing a cash saving of £200,000 annually or a reduction of 250 tonnes in greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Energy costs for the new Victoria and Stobhill Hospitals are lower due to features such as motion sensitive lighting.  Utility bills for the new Southern General are projected to be 60 per cent lower than for a comparable existing hospital.
Saving energy is everyone’s business and as well as being good for the environment it saves money. When we save energy at work that money can go towards saving lives.

Changing work habits - ways to contribute and save day-to-day:

  • turn off vehicle engines rather than have them idling,
  • stop unnecessary printing of documents
  • drop waste in the correct bins or bags. Using the wrong bin hampers recycling efforts and incurs costs too.
