Wednesday, February 14, 2018

A Glasgow clinical nurse specialist who cares for children with digestive disorders has been selected as a finalist for a prestigious national award.

Vikki Garrick, a clinical nurse specialist at the Royal Hospital for Children, has been shortlisted in the British Journal of Nursing awards, in the gastrointestinal/inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) Nurse of the Year category.

She is the only Scotland-based nurse to be shortlisted in the awards, which will be announced at a glittering event in London on Friday, 09 March.

Vikki said: “I was shocked, but delighted, to be selected as a finalist for such a prestigious award, especially as I didn’t even know I had been nominated. I am really grateful and touched by this nomination.”

“I really feel honoured to be recognised in this way for doing a job I love. I also think it’s great that the selection panel has shortlisted me as it highlights the important work my team is doing with young people.

“The young people with IBD I treat face different challenges in life to adults with the condition.

“It affects them in a range of ways at a very important stage in their lives while they’re still growing and developing their own identity. They’re not just small adults, so they deserve to be treated in a way that addresses their specific needs.

Kevin Hill, director of Women and Children’s Services, said: “It’s a real honour for Vikki to be chosen as a finalist – the only one from Scotland.

“The fact that she’s the only paediatric nurse selected in the category is recognition of the crucial contribution Vikki and her team are making to delivering nursing excellence specifically directed towards the needs of young people.

“Vikki and her team put the role of the patient at the very heart of all that they do. It is fitting that she has been selected as a finalist as it is showcases her skills as one of the UK’s leading nurse specialists.”
