Icy Weather Causes Exceptional Number of Patients to Attend Emergency Departments

Wednesday, December 5, 2018

All our Emergency Departments (EDs) and Minor Injury Units (MIUs) across Greater Glasgow and Clyde were exceptionally busy all day yesterday with patients presenting as a result of falls due to the icy conditions.

This led to longer waits for some patients than we would have hoped but our staff still managed to see, treat, admit or discharge eight of every ten patients within the four hour target.

Our staff worked tirelessly throughout the day with staff who were not on shift coming in to provide additional support and staff remaining when their shift ended.

Yesterday our EDs and MIUs saw 1,816 patients across all our sites, an increase of 56% (654 patients) on the daily average at the same time last year.  It was encouraging to see that patients were using the health service appropriately with many patients choosing to go to our MIUs.

Attendances were up considerably at all three of our MIUs with the New Victoria seeing an increase of 56% (155 attendances), New Stobhill an increase of 124% (122 attendances) and Vale of Leven saw an increase of 114% (100 attendances), on the daily average.

Jane Grant, Chief Executive, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said:  “Our Emergency Departments and Minor Injury Units were exceptionally busy yesterday dealing with a significant number of injuries as a result of the icy conditions.

“The response of our staff was outstanding, with many coming in at short notice and staying on duty beyond the end of their shifts to ensure patients were seen and treated as quickly as possible.

“It never ceases to amaze me just how dedicated our staff are and how committed they all are to the most important part of the job - looking after our patients and I have thanked them for all their effort.”

We also had a number of patients pass on their thanks and gratitude to the staff in our hospitals for their hard work, their compassion and good spirits despite being extremely busy.

Patients also expressed their appreciation for how well staff kept them informed during their wait to be seen.
