Once for Scotland Workforce Policies

The refreshed NHSScotland Workforce Policies are now live and should be used with immediate effect. 

NHS Scotland (Once for Scotland) Policy Refresher Sessions

As part of the HR Support & Advice Unit Recovery Plan to recommence full caseload, the above refresher sessions have been agreed in partnership to support managers with the ‘new’ policies.

Similar sessions were previously delivered prior to the implementation date of 1st March 2020 for NHS Scotland policies and supporting documentation. It has been agreed that it some managers may find it beneficial to have further sessions in order to re-familiarise themselves with the main changes to the Phase 1 policies which are:

  • Attendance
  • Bullying & Harassment
  • Capability
  • Conduct
  • Grievance
  • Workforce Policies Investigation Process

There will also be an opportunity for new managers to attend People Development Programme which will include modules on Attendance and Workplace Investigations for further training and knowledge. The People Development Programme will be re-established and advertised in due course.






Developed nationally in partnership with NHSScotland employers, trade unions and the Scottish Government, these policies and associated supporting documents set the standard for employment practice for all NHSScotland Boards to follow. 

The Once for Scotland Workforce policies are person-centred and will be applied using the NHSScotland values: 

  • care and compassion
  • dignity and respect
  • openness, honesty and responsibility
  • quality and teamwork. 

The first phase of implementation includes the following policies: 

  • Attendance
  • Bullying and Harassment
  • Capability
  • Conduct
  • Grievance
  • Workforce Policies Investigation Process. 

The policies promote the use of early resolution, all parties establishing and encouraging open and honest communication and adopting a supportive approach by proactively communicating with and offering support to employees who are involved in any process as part of a workforce policy.
